website for your viewing. Go to Aquatic Plant Management, #1 and Aquatic
Invasive Species Plant Treatment Alternatives, #2.
How far can you see into our lake? Water
transparency used to be 17’ 5", now only 13’ 11" - a 20% decrease. Should
take 100’s of years for that kind of decrease. We got there in only 10 years
due to milfoil and other invasive plants.
We need to stop feeding plants phosphorus. Our
recommendation is not to use fertilizer at all. If you must fertilize, use a
fertilizer with no phosphorus (middle number in the fertilizer components)
Septic systems produce phosphorus. Even if working
well, you should have your septic pumped at least every other year.
If your septic is close to the lake, every year.
Run off- try to control the run off that goes into
the lake. Keep native plants in your yard that will soak up the water run
off.
Decomposing material should not get into the lake.
Take your leaves and other debris to the dump. Do not leave it in your yard
since it will end up back in the lake.
August 13, 6 PM, West Fort Ann Volunteer Fire
Department. We will present and discuss available lake treatment options.
All invited.
July 18, 10 to 1, Hand harvesting demonstration at
480 Hadlock Pond Road. All invited.
Hand harvesting – removal of milfoil and
curly-leaf pondweed is vital. You must take up the whole root of the
plant and remove the plant from the lake. Dispose of the plants at
the dump or a site well away from anyplace that drains into the lake.
Water level drawdown – most experts say this is
effective if there is a hard freeze that takes place before the ground is
blanketed by snow. It can kill off the milfoil while still keeping the
native plants. We want to increase our normal draw down from 5 feet to 10
feet. In a best case scenario, a 10 feet drawdown will take care of 80% of
milfoil if a hard freeze occurs; 20 to 60% may be more realistic depending
on winter conditions. APA recommends a drawdown 2x in a 4 to 5 year period.
The town is requiring 120 signatures from lake residents (one signature per
household) to agree to the drawdown. Please sign the survey that is on your
chair if you are in support of the drawdown. Please take for your neighbors
to sign as well. This costs nothing, but the risk is a slower than normal
refill time in the spring.
We need help with 3 committees: plant committee,
fish survey committee (Finley’s will lead), water quality committee.
Committees will meet after 8/13 meeting.
Thank you for hand harvesting – especially Dick
Goldy’s on water chestnuts.
Old Business
Geese- Please don’t feed. Use a combination of
factors to discourage them - install grid wires/fences, use visual scaring
devices, legally hunt. Population was down at the beginning of the season.
New Business
Next scheduled meeting: September 3, 2010
Wrap up
Joe Taluto - Please let us know if you want to
make a donation or have ideas for parking the harvester.
Gene Connell - Thank you new board members, Susan
Taluto for helping with meeting, and Alex DiLallo for everything you have
done for the past 3 years for helping to make our lake better! We wouldn’t
be where we are today if it weren’t for you!
Meeting adjourned by Gene Connell at 10:50 AM.
